Learn to Brick Stitch: Beginner's Bead Weaving Class

Ever wanted to learn to brick stitch bead weave? You don't know what that is? Well, let me give you a quick explanation...my version of it, of course, so it might not be "wikipedia" worthy.

Brick stitch is a beading method that is used in many beadwork designs and it's my favorite stitch because I can make so many cutesy, shaped designs with it! It's a beading technique that does not require the use of a bead loom but does require patience because each bead is sewn together by hand, with a needle and thread. The final piece will resemble a brick wall with beads stacked upon each other, in straight, neat, off-set rows.

Brick stitch is EASY to learn because it's repetitive. Once you learn the basic stitches, you'll be able to make many of the patterns available in my Etsy shop and on this blog (yes, I'll start adding some☺). You'll also be able to find patterns online (but be sure to credit the designer when you do that!).

In my Brick Stitch for Beginners Class, at The Bead Gallery, Honolulu, we will work with large size 8/0 Miyuki Delica beads. Miyuki Delica beads come in different sizes; the smaller size 11/0 is commonly used for bead weaving, but the larger beads make it easier for learning purposes. You can move on to 11/0's whenever you're ready (which will be soon!). You'll learn the following in class:

  1. How to Start Your Beadwork
  2. Learn to Ladder Stitch
  3. Learn Decreasing Brick Stitch
  4. Learn Increasing Brick Stitch
  5. Learn Multiple Bead Increasing/Decreasing Stitch
  6. Making a "Bead Tip"
  7. How to Add Thread
  8. How to End Your Work
  9. and...I'll throw in some tips
After you're familiar with these basic stitches, we'll work on a real project: A Kawaii Musubi Charm (aka Japanese rice ball or onigiri).
