Good Friends

For the first time in my life, I am planning a large party. I've never planned a big party before. My husband and I kept our wedding very small and my poor kids did not have the customary 1st birthday festivities that a lot of island folks have. Our gatherings usually include only our immediate family members.

This year I'm planning a family lunch for my daughter's class and I'm terrified that I'm going to mess it up. With everyone so busy, volunteers to help are hard to come by so my friend stepped in to give me a hand and moral support. What makes it even more special is that her child does not attend the same school as my child. She's helping me because she's awesome. An awesome person and and awesome friend!

Cheers to good friends...I Love Your Smile!

Railroading in Hawaii

Restoring the old trains

Riding the Hawaiian Railway Train wasn't high on my list of things to do. When the kids were younger, I took them on the train ride on two different occasions, but they do not remember the experience. I do...distracted, bored children. The rumbling, slow pace made them tired and they were not interested in the narrative that accompanied the ride.

For weeks, my daughter had been asking to ride the train. This past Sunday, with a lull in our schedule, we decided to hop on that Choo! Choo! Fare for a 90 minute ride: $12 for adults & $8 for kids.

Everyone go to the restroom first!
Here we go!
To husband: Don't fall asleep! (His first ride)
To kids: Pretend you're enjoying yourself even when you are not.

Entrance to KoOlina

I won't post all the photos but I'll tell you about it.
We rolled pass residential neighborhoods with families waving at us from their backyards. Charming.
We thundered through Kiawe trees and scrubby brush. Saw horses.
We chugged through resort areas, KoOlina/Aulani Disney Resort (above). I wish I were there.
And we ended with an ocean view at Kahe Point before heading back (below). Pretty!

Kahe Point

You know what? I really enjoyed myself. Relaxing, beautiful scenery, nice weather, great kids and husband who stayed awake.

Rating 3 out of 4 stars.

Growing Up...

Signs of Growing Up...

Grey hair...lots of 'em
Reading glasses
Losing your reading glasses
Choosing talk radio over music stations
"Kids nowadays!" is part of your speech

My child asked me to do a survey for her social studies class project. Her respondents included people from different age groups. Although she did not require any explanations to her questions, I felt compelled to provide a commentary for each answer. Unfortunately, I found myself saying, "Kids Nowadays!" or "Kids These Days!",  in most of my answers. My daughter said she should classify me in my own cranky old people category. We got a good laugh out of it but I say this only proves that I'm finally all grown up!

A Day Off with the Dog

It's Wednesday but I'm not taking my walk today. It's my day off. Recently I've been walking early in the morning, right after I send the kids off to school. I've always avoided early strolls because the roads and sidewalks are busy at these times with everyone heading to work and school. However, I decided to change my routine for the dog's sake so he can take longer walks and enjoy the cooler air.

Lately we've caught our dog baying, owwww-ooooo-ooooo-ooooooo, when we pull into our driveway after a day out. I think he gets lonely. Hopefully these longer walks will allow our old pooch to nap while we're gone and not annoy the neighbors. Here he is getting comfortable on his favorite dirty cushion. I find that I'm really enjoying these long morning walks and it is a refreshing way to start the day but today, dog & I, will do chores around the house and perhaps take an afternoon excursion.

I have no outdoor photos to share so here are pictures of my recent beadwork. If you have any beading suggestions for me, I'd love to hear about it. I'm always looking for new ideas.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy your day!

My Beady Face on Shopseen

If you recall, the one word I chose for 2014 was "courage". I was given the opportunity to test my courageousness when Janie of Shopseen contacted me and asked me to do a feature on the Shopseen blog. Initially, I wanted to say "No thank you" especially because I was asked to provide a photo of myself in addition to pictures of my work. While I'm happy to show samples of my beadwork, anonymity suits me just fine. In fact, I prefer to be faceless. Remembering my resolution, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and take advantage of this amazing chance to promote my shop and let others know about the superb service Shopseen is providing.

Because of Shopseen, I've opened another shop on Storenvy. Shopseen's free application allows me to list and sync my inventory on both my Etsy and Storenvy shop from one location. There is no need to switch back and forth between the shops and I can easily control my inventory making sure that my product counts are updated at all times. I have tried managing two shops in the past but found the upkeep very time consuming so I shut down the low performing one. There are other features that are part of the free Shopseen services and a premium service is also available. To learn more about Shopseen, visit this link:

Getting off of my feet ... sort of...

Polar Vortex sounds science fiction! I'm glad I'm not a victim of Mother Nature's bitter cold story. With the temperature in the 60's here at home and the chilly wind blowing, it's hard enough for me to get out of bed so my walk this morning was done in the house (lazy booty). Well, I did do a little cleaning while I mosied.

I stretched to reached for the potholder so I could put it back in it's place. The potholder is old and raggedy but it's terribly cute especially because my little one thinks I'm the best even when I burn her dinner.

I picked up the ribbons that had fallen to the floor. It reminded me that my daughter requested new shoes because maybe, it'll help her run faster.

I removed a picture collage from the dining table so I wouldn't splatter coffee on it. My older one loves to draw. She is now working on drawing dogs and people but she loves drawing cats. I think Clover is quite cute.

Bundle up. Stay warm. Be safe and enjoy your day.

Courage for 2014

Like many of the people I know, I have a hard time believing that another year has passed us by. New Year's Eve was a quieter than normal celebration with just my husband and kids in the front yard. We roasted marshmallows over the grill, burned quite a lot but made a few it into edible s'mores, and watched our neighbor's firework displays from our lawn chair. Our children played with party poppers and noise makers, though many in our neighborhood lit up the sky with firecrackers and *ahem* other loud bangy devices. On the first day of 2014, we went to lunch at grandma's and enjoyed the company of our extended family.

Winter break is coming to an end and school will be in session soon. The kids are moaning and groaning - so am I. We are really savoring this much needed down time together.

While I am not much for making or keeping New Year's resolutions, I do start the year with a goal in mind. This year I am going with the "One Word" challenge. My one word of inspiration is Courage. I won't go into all of the reasons why I chose this particular word but basically it's courage to make the changes that I need to in order to move towards a fulfilling future.

As we enter 2014, I wish all of you a happy, healthy, prosperous year. I'd love to know if you have set any resolutions or have any goals for yourself this year. Thank you for your friendship, your words of encouragement and for sharing your smile with me!
