Worm Story

Okay, I shared with you a pig story and a bird story. How about a short worm story today?

I don't particularly care for worms but I'm not squeamish about them like my kids are. As a child, my siblings and I would go earthworm hunting so we could use the worms as fishing bait. We did feel sad for the worms and eventually switched to non-live bait. Today I have a bucket of India Blue Worms. I picked through compost dirt and found the worms. I pet my worms, talk to them and hula hoop with them...just kidding. My worms just hide and eat. Not much fun but at least I have a place to throw my food scraps.

Here are my bookworm charms. They are much cuter and a lot more colorful than the worms in my bucket! I hope you like them.

Thanks for stopping by today!

Peep! Cheep! Tweet!

Peep! Cheep! Tweet! shout the little baby Bulbuls that have found a home in a twig of a tree near our front door. At first we wondered why mommy bird decided to nest here. The tree is barely a tree and very near to foot traffic but after reading about Bulbuls, we discovered that these birds do nest in strange places. And besides that, the bird's home is somewhat protected from wind and rain making this a cozy place to settle down when the weather is bad.

Normally, I would shoo these birds away because they peck at anything that I have managed to grow and are known to eat caterpillars. I work hard to grow a butterfly garden so these birds are usually not welcomed here. However, because the baby birds are so ugly-cute and my crown flower plants are dead, we enjoy a little time each day watching both mommy and daddy bird bring food to their chicks. It seems that the birds favor lizards. Oh yum!

It's so fascinating to watch these chicks grow up! Hopefully I will be able to share more photos with you but in the meantime, please take a look at the these wonderful bird links from my Blog It Up Community on G+

Pig Stories

Have you ever held a baby pig?

A piglet feels hard and sort of muscular, not soft and squishy. At first, they wiggle, squirm and squeal but when settled, they will grunt the cutest grunt! I think it's that grunt, and the funny way that they sprint when they are playing and of course their cuteness that got me. Our family once owned an orphaned pig who's mama was probably someone's smoked meat pupu. Piggy was a black, prickly thing but despite it's uncuddliness, Piggy was always looking for a hug. It would greet strangers by running up to them, sometimes sending surprised visitors scurrying away. Piggy's story has a tragic ending. She tried to say "Hello!" to hunters. I can only imagine that the hunters couldn't believe their good luck.

On a cheerier note, I've finally completed my beaded pig charms. I re-did the pattern several times until I captured the look that I wanted. These are tiny little things measuring no more than 1.75 cm. in height x 1.25 cm. in width. It's done in the Peyote stitch bead weaving method with 11/0 Delica seed beads. I have one salmon pink pig and one creamy white pig. You can find it here.

And, from my bookshelf, I found two of my favorite pig stories.

Curious Kimo by Malia Maness is story about an adventurous pig who does not heed his mother's warning and goes on a search with friends for juicy, delicious guavas.

The Three Pigs is a Caldecott Medal book by David Weisner. It's a twist on the original children's book The Three Little Pigs. My kids and I enjoyed the funny, comic book like illustrations and the happy ending.

I'll stop now before I start sounding like the crazy pig lady but I'd love for you to share your pig stories or items.

Thanks for visiting today and please come back for tomorrow's I Love Your Smile list!

Cuuuute!

I was going to post a photo of the cute baby birds that are living in a nest near our front door but, I'm posting something even cuter!

I received this calender and card, handcrafted by Eva, at crafting this and that.  When she buys something from me, she sends me a "thank you" gift! How sweet is that?!

Bead Patterns and Rabbits

Hello! How is your day going so far? Our family had a busy but fun weekend and I think we're going to have a great week.

I wanted to show you a few of the projects I've been working on. I've listed two more patterns on my Craftsy Pattern Store, the raccoon and the soccer ball. I sell the patterns for $1.50 each and it includes a PDF download of the supply list, bead chart, legend, and a photo of a completed project. I'm glad to share my patterns and ask those who recreate my design to kindly credit my shop. Unfortunately, I saw my Panda on sale in another Etsy shop without the appropriate credit. Sigh...sad, disappointed face.

I've also completed bunnies!  I was so happy with the little white and yellow rabbits that I made them into charms and necklaces. I'm re-working little pigs today. I love pigs - especially clean, wiggly piglets that grunt when you hold them. I want to capture that cuteness in a beaded charm and I am finding that quite hard to do.

What are your plans for the day? Have fun!

Crown Flower Catastrophe

Once upon a time I had 3 crown flower fledglings. Tiny little crown flower stumpettes with great juicy leaves. Then the butterflies came, leaving behind oodles of eggs that hatched into hungry hungry caterpillars. Within days my plants were embarrassingly bare and naked but those little caterpillars still had a bad case of the munchies and needed to be fed. Luckily a friend adopted these babies and provided them with a new home and most of them transformed into beautiful Monarch butterflies. (Most = she had a head count every day. Good mommy!) Bad weather and possibly the humiliation of being left in the buff may have caused my crown flower plants to kick the bucket.

My latest attempt includes protecting my plants in a dog kennel to keep the butterflies away until the cuttings have rooted and leaves have sprouted. As you can see from the photo, I have been unsuccessful.

While I still do not have the butterfly garden that I have always wanted, I am happy to share with you these beautiful butterflies via my Facebook friends.

Too Close and Splat!

Beaded Whale Bracelet
I was looking through old photos and saw a snapshot of our whale watching adventure on Maui. Have you ever gone whale watching? It's amazing! To be up close to those huge, majestic whales was definitely thrilling but I worried we were getting too cozy with that powerful tail. One swish and our boat would splat to little pieces. Inspired by these beautiful creatures, I beaded whales - in bright, happy colors of course. My kids said I needed a whale family so here is daddy, baby and mommy whale spending Valentine's Day together.

Happy Valentine's Day to you!

A Swinging Pendulum

The most meaningful gifts are handmade even if you're not too sure what it is. Don't you agree?
This is a pendulum made with painted branches and tied together. There is a little swinging bird in the center. One of my favorite gifts.

Malasada Revelry

Malasada
Pastry Maker: joyosity
When I think of Mardi Gras, the word "revelry" comes to mind. An exuberant celebration with food, drink, parades, costumes and colorful beads (yay beads!). Here in our home, we don't partake in Mardi Gras festivities but instead, we recognize Fat Tuesday as Malasada Day. Malasada is a donut-like Portuguese pastry covered with lots of sugar. I'll go to the bakery and buy some if the wait is not too long, otherwise I'll just make pretend malasadas using prepared (Pillsbury) buttermilk dough. Brawling over the last hot malasada is part of the party.

Are you celebrating Mardi Gras? Perhaps you'd like to make some malasadas. If so, here is a recipe for you...click here.

When Uncle Comes to Town...

Do you know the children's song, She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain {♪♪}?

Beaded Music Note Bracelet

This upbeat, sing-along song reminds me of Uncle when he comes to "the city" except he will not be driving six white horses but a rental car {vroom! vroom!}. We all go out to meet him when he comes {alooooha!} He'll be wearing brand new Nikes when he comes {so cool} and will have to sleep on the lumpy sofa with the cat {meow!}.

With Uncle in mind, I found these wonderful gift ideas that all uncles will probably appreciate. I'm happy to share them with you so c'mon, click the link and take a look!

I Love Your Smile!

Quick! Tell me about something that made you laugh this week. What is the first thing that comes to mind?

Here's mine...ummmm....

A Wii hula hoop challenge with my daughter. I won! I can still sway those old lady hips! My daughter won the balance challenge but it didn't help that she ran around me and poked me in the belly while I was trying to concentrate.

I said one, but here's another. My older one set up a restaurant and when she discovered that she was not making much of a profit, she started charging for plates. You can't eat roast chicken with gravy from your hands! She said, "No outside plates allowed - cross contamination!"

Laughing and smiling all week with...

* ChatterBlossom {Jamie}
* crafting this and that {Eva}
* Joy of Crafting {joy}
* Creations by Shirl {Shirl}

And I'm so grateful to ansluasi for including my Yellow Daisy Beaded Flower Earrings in her cheerful Treasury, My Only Sunshine.

Who needs red for Valentine's Day when you can shower your sweet with sunshine instead?

Ansluasi's shop, Once Upon a Bookshop, is filled with preciously sweet rare vintage books that you must see!

Please stop by and visit the links above. You'll leave with a happy grin on your face!

Thanks for popping in today.
