I Love Your Smile!

It's Friday so soon and I Love Your Smile!  Have you noticed that each Friday I have been posting a list of my wonderful blog friends who make me smile?  I am happy if you have noticed because that means you are a regular visitor...hooray!  Below is my weekly list of my top supporters who, during the last 30 days, have left me the most comments.  The top commentator will get a 'thank you' gift from me for making me smile!  I'll let you know on Monday, who that special person is.  (Hint:  On the bottom right corner of my blog is a comment counter.)

    Loving Your Blog...

    Loving Your Blog...Love Me Back?

Recently I set up my Google reader so I could regularly visit the blogs that follow me on Google Friend Connect. After all, if you follow me, I should follow you back AND read your blog posts! It took me a while to subscribe to everyone's feed but I did it (hooray!) and now I can visit you whenever you update your blog.  I will need to update my list if you're a new follower, so to give me a helping hand, feel free to leave your blog link if you just got here.

I am also using bloglovin' because I know some of you already use this tool. If you are a bloglovin' user, slowly but surely I will find you.  For those not familiar with this gadget, all I need to do is click the bloglovin' follow button and, automatically (!), I will be notified when your blog is updated.  You can click my button at the end of this post =)  ***Update: If you're following me via bloglovin' and would like me to follow back, please leave me a comment with your blog link.  I realize that I can't return the favor because I don't know who you are.

Happy hugs to all of you who have visited and commented on my blog posts. I am keeping tabs of your comments.  On the bottom, right hand corner of my page is a section that shows the number of comments that you have made over the past 30 days (a Y! Pipes tool).  I really should do something nice for the person with the most smile points...don't you think so?!

I appreciate your support very much!  I am Loving Your Blog!  Will You Love Me Back?

    Beach Break

Today I'm going to take a break with the family because it's such a beautiful day.  Yesterday, it rained a lot but the sun is out now so we're heading for the beach.  Here is a photo of our previous hike at the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail.

    Enjoy your day!

    Tribal Dragon

Last week I worked on a couple of dark fantasy patterns just to try something new.  I do enjoy fantasy books and mythical stories with scary beasts and unearthly powers but it was with hesitation that I beaded up my new design with this theme.  I feel comfortable beading up flowers and happy faces but with very little sales in my shop for the month of June, I thought it wouldn't hurt to expand my horizons a little.

This tattoo like, tribal dragon first started out as a bat (with thoughts of Halloween) but became more dragon-ish as I continued working on it.  I hope you like it.  Find it on Handmade + Cute, Etsy.

    Something For Sunday

We recently purchased a digital drawing tablet so my kids could continue their online drawing activity.  I wanted to get in on the action as well. Here is my first drawing using the VisTablet and an Usborne book on How to Draw Fairies and Mermaids by Fiona Watt.

Not a masterpiece but definitely fun to do!

    The Butterfly Girl

This is a new style for me. I was inspired by the black and white images in a recent book that I read. A bit spooky, a bit Gothic, and a lot of fantasy went into creating this 206 piece, bead woven Butterfly Girl. I started by sketching a picture of a fairy that eventually evolved into a Butterfly Girl holding her chin as if pondering a question. Because I do love color, along with the dominant gray and black beads used in the wings and body, I included bright orange hair and spots of yellow on the wings. I did not include any hardware with this piece but did include a beaded loop at the top so you can convert this charm into a necklace pendant or a decoration for your key ring, cell charm or however you may want to use it.

    Beaded Hawaiian Quilt Motif

I love Hawaiian quilts!  Hawaiian quilts are sometimes made to include bold floral designs or animal appliques but often, the patterns are often symmetrical, snowflake-like botanical motifs that are quilted on white fabric. Not having the skill and patience to make a Hawaiian quilt, I made this pendant instead.

Using opaque white and chili pepper red Toho seed beads in size 11 and employing the square stitch method of beading, my finished piece measures approximately 2.5 cm. by 3 cm.  I wish I could tell you how many seed beads were used in this project but I accidentally deleted the pattern and information from my computer.  If I ever decide to recreate this design, it'll probably be from this photo.

I hope you like this piece.  It's listed in my shop.

    The Interactive Blogging Team

Recently I joined the Interactive Blogging Team on Etsy to motivate me with my blogging.  It has become a fun way for me to discover new blogs and participate in discussions while nudging me to post on a regular basis.  Joining this team has also connected me with members on Facebook and Twitter (look for the #actblogteam hashtag) and I have found some great shops on Etsy.

For more information about this wonderful team, click ===> here.  Also visit our member's shops and of course, the Captain's Blog.  BTW, the Captain wants to know...how will you have your tea?

    Colorful Candy Hearts

Candy Hearts are so cute so I thought I'd bottle a few up and make a charm. I had a bit of a problem with the photo because of the translucent crystal beads I used for the bottle but here is my Seed Bead Candy Heart Charm in a Crystal Jar.

    Shiba Inu

Another bead design is based on an illustration by Flareheart.  The Shiba Inu is Japan's native dog  breed known for it's independence and loyalty.    Here is my seed bead version of this confident and affectionate dog.  The finished piece is attached to a split jump ring to use as a charm or pendant.  Slip on to your favorite chain, key ring or cell phone strap.  This beaded charm is now available in my shop, Handmade + Cute.

    Step 5

After the Creative Process, this is what I do with my beaded pieces.

Step 5:  Decide what I want to do with my completed design.
    1.  Give it away (usually the case when I'm not totally satisfied with the finished product.)
    2.  List It on Etsy (if I like the finished piece, that's what I do).

I stink at marketing my products.  I usually do a post on my blog, facebook and twitter.  Then I hope someone will see my stuff and like it. So BIG HUGS to you who have ordered from me and to those who spread the word!!!!   (Most special thanks to SassySashadoxie and Catcalls on Etsy who, despite managing their own shops, have been kind enough to promote my products.)

Now here (step 5, #2) is my Siberian Husky that I recently listed in my shop.  Pattern based on image by Flareheart.

    My Creative Process

    My Creative Process Explained

    1.  The Big Idea - usually occurs when I'm tired and laying in bed but my mind has not yet shut down.
    2.  The Drawing.  I discovered that I can save time by using my daughter's drawings.  I plan to commission some drawing from her in exchange for hugs.
    3.  The Pattern.  I use and love the Bead Tool software to transfer drawings into bead patterns.
    4.  Once the idea, the drawing and the pattern is complete, I get out The Beads!

"The Husky", drawing by *Flareheart,  is my next project.

    What's your creative process?

    Horsey Done

I'm done with my carousel horse.  It turned out to be an easy beaded project.  The most noticeable change I made from the original design is the color of the horse's mane - from pink to blue. I love pink but the color I was working with blended into the white of the horse so I changed it to a brighter blue.  I attached the completed piece to a simple split ring and now it can be added to any chain, ribbon, key ring, etc.

    I hope you like it.

    Carousel Horse

Here is a peek of my carousel horse that I will be starting on today.   Lately my daughter has been very vocal in critiquing my patterns.

Let me share with you some of her comments.
"Mom!  The face is too fat!"
    "I don't like that color."
    "The nose looks weird."

So with her help, I've made changes to the design and here is the final pattern.  For this brick stitch project, I will be using size 11 Toho seed beads.  There are 7 different colors and the bead count is 263 beads.

At times the finished product does not look like my visualized pattern and back to the beginning I go - round and round...  Wish me luck that this carousel horse will be a success.

    My Inspiration: PMS and Popcorn

So ladies, I was having those cravings...something sweet, something salty.  There were two bags of popcorn on the counter, different brands, so I opened both.  Tasting from one, sampling the other, both so yummy but I liked the crunch and flavor of the Paradise Kettle Corn best.  I was oohing and aahing at all the different colors, having a psychedelic moment, when it hit me... I'll make little popcorn bead balls.      Not a classy name but here it is.

    Randal Would Go!

Sometimes I drive here and there so that my Oahu customers can get their products free of shipping.  Sometimes I need to drive far.  Sometimes not too far.  Most of the times, I get lost.  I think this is a bit humbug for my customers as well for me because we all need to take time out of our day to make this transaction happen and the cost of gas...sheesh!  This is where Randal comes into the picture.

Randal, he's our postman.  Trustworthy, reliable and friendly.  As long as the correct postage is on my package, Randal Would Go and deliver the mail so that it gets to the right person and the correct destination.  Because Randal Would Go without complaint, I will make use of his services.  So...if you make a purchase from my shop, Handmade + Cute on Etsy and you are mailing your parcel to an Oahu address, you get free shipping when you enter coupon code SHIPOAHU upon checkout.

Just so you know, Randal will not deliver packages that are addressed "two houses after the big mango tree after the 'ono smoked aku 4 sale' sign".

    Mahalo!
