I'm Making a Wish Soon

I'm making a wish soon.

According to Native American legend, when you give a butterfly its freedom, your wish will be taken to heaven and granted.

I was mindful of this beautiful moment, as I waited for the butterfly to emerge from it's translucent chrysalis.  I felt the cool, damp morning breeze on my face and soaked up the tiny rays of sunshine that was beginning to peek through the morning sky.  I waited, patiently, so I wouldn't miss this amazing experience of a caterpillar now journeying into life in a new form as a gorgeous butterfly.

YEAH RIGHT!

I finished up my coffee and the morning paper in front of the butterfly "habitat" (that I'm babysitting for a friend on vacation). I was impatient and fidgety but didn't want to miss the moment.  "Hurry Up!" I said.  "I've got things to do...busy, busy day!"  Then, "You've got 5 more minutes or you're doing this alone!"  Within that 5 minutes, I noticed a wiggle and quickly after that, here is what I saw.

Pretty isn't it?!  I am so glad that I waited (patiently).

"Thank You Butterfly", I said.  "Let me know when you are ready to fly."

p.s. Our butterfly fascination all started after a visit to Dancetta's White Monarchs of Hawaii.

DIY Duct Tape Feather Bookmark

I saw a really fun duct tape feather earring project that I wanted try.

Unfortunately I'm not cool enough to wear these trendy earrings so I decided to make duct tape feather bookmarks instead.

Here is how I did it:

My supplies:  Duct Tape, Beads, Scissors, Hemp Twine (approx. 18") and Glue.  I didn't use the needle. Instead I used glue to stiffen one end of my hemp twine to help me string my beads.

1.  I knotted the end (that was not glued) and added a bead.

2.  I place the twine on a piece of tape measuring about 4" or so.  This will be the spine of the feather.

3.  Fold the tape over the twine.

4.  Cut into a feather shape and create a fringe.

5.  Add beads.

6.  Cut another piece of tape, about 4", and fold it over.

7.  Shape, cut fringes then poke a hole at the top of your feather and thread it on the twine to fit snugly against the first feather.  Add more beads and knot to keep beads in place.

8.  At the other end of the twine, tie a knot about "3-4 inches in and add beads.  Cut another piece of tape and fold it over just like you did in step 3.

9.  Once again, shape and cut fringes.  Then, add a bead to the bottom of your feather and knot to keep bead in place. Trim excess twine.

10.  Here is the finished Duct Tape Feather Bookmark.
You can add glue to the knots to secure it if you like.

Now you can read a good book and mark your spot so you don't lose your page.  What are you reading right now?

Thanks for visiting.  I hope you try this simple and fun project!

Custom Request

For the past few days I've been working on a custom request to make a charm out of a photo model.  My model is someone very special and a best friend - his name is Charlie. Needless to say, it was very important that I get the details right.  Charlie is of mixed ancestry, his notable features include white streaks on his face and fluffy ears (how do I make my beads look fluffy?). Working with a "real" model is new to me so it took me several attempts to finish my project.

Here's Charlie...

I hope I made Charlie and Charile's mommy happy by capturing his likeness in my beadwork.

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful day!
